Erosion control is the practice of preventing or controlling wind or water erosion in agriculture, land development, coastal areas, riverbanks and construction.

The practice of erosion control, also referred to as “soil stabilization,” utilizes various control methods and techniques. There are two basic methods to approach erosion control: reducing runoff amount; and reducing runoff velocity.

1) Reducing runoff amount:

  • To prevent run-on

            - Diversion channels

            - Interception ditches

  • To increase infiltration

            - Terraces

            - Contour bunds

           - Waterways

           - Ridge tillage

           - Broad beds

2) Reducing runoff velocity

  • Porous barriers

          - Riprap

          - Reno mattress

           - Woven & mat barriers

  • Concrete structures

          - Drop structures

          - Chutes

          - Check dams
